The Final Strand was written to become a part of the CD sampler "Crash - a Tribute to JG Ballard" on which it was amongst tracks by, amongst others, Sabotage and ClockDVA (quite the achievement for me back then). Later it was also published on the "Solaris" tape release.
The inspiration for this melodic and melancholic piece of music comes from Ballard's short story "Terminal Beach" - which in German is called "Der letzte Strand" ("Strand" = Beach) which I then translated back into English incorrectly by mistake (somehow forgetting to translate Strand) - which explains the title not fitting to it's origin now. oO
This certainly is one of my favourite tunes, one that I'm not ashamed to have written (like some of the old Doodlebug stuff). :D

"[...] I read your explanation of it on your website, which says you based the song on the JGB short, ‘The Final Strand’. You say it “touched me: a man, living – or better: dying – alone on an island used as a nuclear testing ground, is visited by visions of his family. *Very* sad.”
But surely the song is based on the short story ‘The Terminal Beach’? That is the exact storyline you are describing here, ie a man dying on a nuclear island — that’s ‘The Terminal Beach’! As far as I know there is no story of Ballard’s called ‘The Final Strand’!
Has the title been lost in translation, perhaps?
All the best,
Simon"
And of course Simon is absolutely right! The name of the tune has been wrong all those years! I had a German translation of "The Terminal Beach" called "Der Finale Strand" and instead of checking the original's title I translated it back incorrectly and never ever noticed it!
